I'm back.
Well, I was back early Wednesday morning. Like at 2 AM. I proceeded to sleep until I had to drag myself out of bed for the home concert at church. I got home and went back to sleep, all told I've slept more in the past 36 hours than I've been awake. Choir tour was awesome as always. This was my fourth year, and I feel like a seasoned veteran compared to the timid little 7th graders. It doesn't seem to long ago, however that I was one of their ranks. Enough rambling, time for my quick run down of where I was, and what I was doing.
We left from church about 11 Friday morning and hauled to get to California on time. Most of the trip was spent planning fictitious military encounters with Trox, and trying to avoid the fact the he was acting like a homosexual rapist (more on that later). At about one we stopped at a Burger King for lunch and I happened to notice the displays chock full of AOL CD's. Now, knowing that it was my patriotic duty to obtain these CD's, I grabbed about four every time I walked by the counter. By the time we left I had amassed about 24. After several more hours on the bus we arrived at Spurgeon UMC for two hours of rehearsal for the concert the next night. We then drove another hour and a half (or so) to Carlsbad, where the motel was. Now, this was something special to me, because we had stayed in the exact same motel two years earlier. It's a nice place, and right across from the beach. By the time we arrived everyone was thoroughly sick of the inside of the bus, so our director took us on what he called an "energy buster walk". His theory is this, "teens get their second wind just as it is time for lights out". He therefore, tried his hardest to wear us out. It worked.
The next day we just sat on the beach getting sunburned. Not even my semi-Asian complexion saved me, I was sunburned on the face. Almost as soon as we arrived one of our number was almost dragged out to sea. Turns out that the riptides are real strong in that area. It took us half the day to find a safer spot to swim, but once we did it was fun. That night we had a concert in the church where we held rehearsals the evening before. I'm not sure if it was because we were tired, or sunburned, or didn't have enough practice as previous years, but the concert went really badly. We retired to our motel and called it a night.
The next day was Sunday. We had to wake up at six-thirty to sing at the church where our concert was to be held that night (kind of a promotional thing). We stayed until lunch, where we found a Jack In The Box. Now, on any normal trip a Jack In the Box would have no significance, but to us weird choir people this is where we sing out amen. On the first choir tour from our church years ago the entire group was in a Jack in the Box with time to kill, so the director taught them a very lovely amen to sing. We've sung it at Jack In the Box ever since. We also visited an old Spanish mission and sang it in the chapel (the acoustics there were much better). We then preceded to travel back to the church and have our second concert. Because the concert was early in the evening we went bowling afterwards. Good fun and gutterballs all around.
Because Monday was memorial day, we could not find a concert that night. So we basically spent the day being tourists. We took the ferry to Coronado and went to see the baseball game that night (Rockies won, woo). I'll take this opportunity to explain Trox's behavior (or try to). There is this kid I'm friends with, and he's all cool and stuff, but he is a homophobe (not that I embrace homosexuality or anything) and Trox spent the whole trip acting gay around him. And I don't mean happy. It was funny to watch but Trox was so convincing that I was worried sometimes. At least I wasn't rooming with him, his roommates really got creeped out (church trip, remember?).
Tuesday was spent at Disneyland. I don't especially like Disneyland, but I spent the time with some Senior friends who I'm not sure I'll see much of anymore, so I had a good time. The highlight was the Star Wars gift shop. I got a poster of Jango for my room. Why? Well, it's simple: He's a badass. The trip home that night was uneventful (unless you count the bathroom in the back of the bus, but I won't because I'm trying to not make you sick). I got more reading done than I expected, and listened to some music. I'm almost done with the Dragoncrown cycle; Michael A. Stackpole is my hero. goodnight.
