  Brent's Maui Adventure, Part 1
As I’m writing this it is 12:30 AM Hawaii time on the 29th. I don’t know when or if I’ll get to post this. Here’s a brief chronological account of what has transpired so far.

We left Phoenix on Saturday morning, I ended up not sleeping at all the night before, so I was dead tired enough to sleep a little on the plane (something that almost never happens, I went on a red eye flight once and just stared at the seat in front of me because I couldn’t sleep). It seemed that as soon as I fell asleep, my sister was bugging me because she had to go to the bathroom and I had the aisle seat. For the sake of efficiency mom got up at the same time as Kelsey. After they left I would fall asleep and be woken when Kelsey returned from the lavatory. I then would fall asleep again only to be awakened when mom returned from the back of the plane. All told it happened three times spaced evenly through the trip. Very annoying for me, though, if it wasn’t happening to me I probably would have found it to be funny in some sick, twisted way. After we arrived and did the usual impression-of-a-heard-of-cattle-waiting-around-a-luggage-carrousel routine we stopped to pick up groceries for the condo. I love staying in a condominium; you just get a sense of greater self-sufficiency than a hotel. By the time we got to the condo I hadn’t had any decent sleep in thirty-six hours. I just crashed and woke up in time to go out to dinner with my sister’s friend’s family who just *happened* to be in Maui at the exact same time! (Typing does not often convey sarcasm so I’ll just point out that they did plan it like this, albeit without input from me). I stayed up after dinner to watch [adult swim], it comes on at eight here and again at eleven. I approve.

The next day (Sunday) we went snorkeling in the morning. I was freaking out on the way to the airport on Saturday because I had forgotten my contacts. Stupid of me, but I don’t wear them at all anymore, I just wanted them for snorkeling. The dive shop we went to was able to rent me a prescription face mask. Snorkeling was really cool, we drove south until we found this beach that was almost deserted. It had a really nice reef just offshore with some neat fish. I have some pictures that I took with my underwater camera, but it’s not digital, so I won’t have then available for a while. That afternoon we went back to the condo and hung out. We had Lauren’s family over that night and we ordered pizza. And so ended day two.

Monday (today) we took windsurfing lessons in the morning. I could have sworn I’d done this before, but anything resembling aptitude for it must have been exorcized from me over the years. Afterwards I went shopping with my mom. I was trying to find this one fruit I’d had before, but couldn’t remember the name of. They are close in size to large grapes and have a rough bumpy skin that peels off to reveal a soft white fruit. Dammit, I can’t remember what they are called. I also stopped by an internet café to check my mail and stuff. I got a lot of reading in on East of Eden today, it’s ok but I never liked Steinbeck for some reason. I think it’s the way he treats his characters, they represent the “human condition” or some shit. The way he writes about people of faith, he makes it pretty obvious that he thinks Christianity (and all other religion, for that matter) is bullshit. I don’t know where I got this idea; I think it is just the feel of his books. Maybe I’m too tired to be trying to write my opinion of the “book that brought back Oprah’s book club” just for that Steinbeck deserves to be shot. And yes, I know he’s dead. We need to bring him back to life. And then shoot him.

I’m tired. Bedtime now.
